First-Timer India Readiness Checklist

The gap between deciding to visit India and actually feeling ready to go is usually filled with small, scattered questions. Is my passport valid for long enough. Do I need any vaccinations. What should I actually pack. Will my card work at Indian ATMs. None of these questions are complicated on their own, but answering them one at a time, from a dozen different web pages, is where first time nerves tend to creep in.

This checklist brings everything into one place, organised into four sections, documents, health, packing and money, with a progress bar that fills in as you work through it. It also includes a short note for each of the eight countries we welcome travellers from, since a few of the practical details, particularly around visas and banking, genuinely differ depending on where you are travelling from.

How to Use This Tool

● Select where you are travelling from for a short, relevant note on visas and money.

● Work through each section, Documents, Health, Packing and Money, ticking items off as you complete them.

● Watch your overall readiness progress fill in at the top as you go.

● Use Reset Checklist if you want to start again, useful if you are planning more than one trip or checking on behalf of a travel companion.

● Treat this as a starting checklist, not an exhaustive one, your specific itinerary may call for a few extra items of its own.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a visa to visit India?

Most travellers from our eight core markets are eligible for an India e-Visa, but exact eligibility, cost and processing time depend on your nationality and can change. Always check the official India visa portal directly rather than relying on general advice, and apply well ahead of your travel dates.

What vaccinations do I need before travelling to India?

This depends on your personal health history, your specific itinerary, and current guidance, which is exactly why this checklist points you toward a doctor or travel health clinic rather than listing specific vaccines itself. Book this appointment several weeks ahead of travel, since some vaccinations need time to take effect.

Will my debit or credit card work in India?

Most international cards work at ATMs and card machines in cities and tourist areas, but it is worth confirming your card has no unexpected foreign transaction fees and notifying your bank of your travel dates beforehand, since unexpected card blocks are one of the most common early trip frustrations.

How much of this checklist applies if I am travelling on a fully guided UK India Tourism tour?

All of it still matters. A private, guided itinerary takes care of the logistics once you are in India, transfers, accommodation, sightseeing, but the documents, health preparation, packing and money steps in this checklist are still yours to handle before you travel, regardless of how the trip itself is organised.

Is this checklist different depending on which region of India I am visiting?

The core checklist applies everywhere, but a few items matter more for certain itineraries, altitude related health precautions for a Ladakh trip, for example, or specific vaccination advice for a longer or more rural itinerary. Mention your specific route to your doctor or travel clinic so their advice reflects where you are actually going.

More on This Topic

This checklist works well as a starting point before diving into the more detailed planning tools in this series.

● Altitude Sickness Risk Checker: worth reviewing specifically if your itinerary includes Ladakh or another high altitude region.

● INR Exchange Rate and Currency Trend Tool: useful once you reach the money section of this checklist.

● Monsoon and Regional Weather Planner: helpful for deciding exactly what to pack once you know your travel month and regions.

● Jet Lag Recovery Planner: a natural next step once your documents and health preparation are sorted and your travel dates are confirmed.

If this is your first trip to India and the checklist still leaves you with questions, that is exactly what a travel consultant conversation is for, the general preparation covered here pairs with itinerary specific guidance once your trip is being planned in detail.
