The City That Was Built for Love

Some cities are historic. Some are beautiful. Some are spiritually powerful or architecturally magnificent or culturally irreplaceable. Udaipur is all of these things and it is also something rarer and harder to define. It is romantic in the deepest, most complete sense of the word: a city whose every element, the lakes, the palaces, the light, the pace, the sound of water and temple bells at dusk  seems to have been arranged, with great deliberate care, for the specific purpose of making two people fall more deeply in love with each other and with the world they are standing in together.

The Maharanas of Mewar, who built Udaipur over five centuries beginning in 1559, were not merely constructing a capital city. They were constructing a vision of beauty as governance, of water as architecture, of the natural landscape of the Aravalli Hills and the interconnected lakes as a setting into which palaces and gardens and temples could be placed like jewels in a setting already designed for them. The result is a city that feels, even now, even seen through the lenses of a thousand travel photographs and a hundred Bollywood films, genuinely and consistently breath taking.

The Lake Palace floating on the silver surface of Lake Pichola. The City Palace rising in tiers of marble and granite above the eastern shore. The Monsoon Palace silhouetted against an evening sky that changes colour every few minutes as the sun descends over the Aravalli Hills. The narrow lanes of the old city, where the smell of marigolds and incense and cooking mingles in the evening air and the sound of music drifts from a rooftop restaurant somewhere above.

The Royal Udaipur Honeymoon Tour brings you here. Beginning and ending in Delhi, using India's comfortable Fast AC train network to carry you between the capital and Rajasthan's most romantic city, this six-day journey is designed with one purpose above all others: to give you and the person you love an experience of India that is beautiful, unhurried, private, and completely unforgettable.

This is your honeymoon. It should feel like one.

Day by Day Itinerary - Six Days of Royal Romance

Day 1: Arrival in Delhi - First Evening in India

At Indira Gandhi International Airport, our representative will be waiting to welcome you personally and transfer you to your hotel in a private, air-conditioned SUV. After a long international flight, the first thing a honeymoon needs is comfort and ease and that is exactly what we provide from the moment you land.

Delhi in the evening, seen from the window of a comfortable car, is a city of extraordinary energy and contrast, the illuminated towers of the modern city alongside the floodlit domes of Mughal monuments, the street food vendors and the five-star hotel facades and the auto-rickshaws weaving through traffic with the confidence of animals in their natural habitat. It is overwhelming and wonderful simultaneously, and it is the perfect beginning.

Depending on your arrival time and energy levels, we can arrange a gentle first evening, a walk through a nearby market, a drive past India Gate illuminated at night, or simply dinner at a good restaurant near your hotel. There is no pressure and no schedule. Tonight is for arriving, for breathing, for the quiet excitement of a journey beginning.

Rest well. Tomorrow, Delhi opens itself to you and tomorrow evening, Udaipur begins.

Day 2: Delhi Sightseeing + Evening Train to Udaipur - The Journey to the Lake City

After a relaxed breakfast, your private SUV and English-speaking driver are waiting to show you the highlights of New Delhi, a city that, even as a single day's introduction, offers an astonishing concentration of history and grandeur.

India Gate & Rajpath - The great sandstone war memorial at the ceremonial heart of New Delhi, standing at the end of the grand ceremonial boulevard that runs from the President's House to the gates of the city, is one of the defining images of the Indian capital. In the morning light, with the fountains playing and the broad lawns stretching on either side, it is a magnificent and surprisingly peaceful place.

Rashtrapati Bhavan (President's House) - The view from the end of Rajpath toward the great domed building that serves as the official residence of the President of India, designed by Edwin Lutyens and completed in 1929, its 340 rooms making it the largest presidential residence in the world, is one of the great formal vistas of any capital city. The scale of it, the confidence of the architecture, and the extraordinary backdrop of the Indian sky make it a photographic moment of considerable power.

Janpath Market & Connaught Place - For a first taste of Indian shopping, the lanes of Janpath Market offer a cheerful, accessible introduction: handicrafts, textiles, jewellery, and souvenirs at fair prices in a market that has been serving Delhi's visitors for decades. Connaught Place, the grand circular commercial centre of New Delhi with its Georgian colonnaded buildings, is excellent for lunch, coffee, and the particular pleasure of watching one of the world's great cities go about its busy, characterful day.

Evening Fast AC Train to Udaipur - In the early evening, we drive you to the railway station to board the Fast AC Train to Udaipur. This is one of the great practical pleasures of this package. Rather than a long road journey or a rushed domestic flight with its airport anxiety and rigid timing, you board a comfortable, air-conditioned train and travel through the night to Rajasthan. The seats are reserved, the journey is smooth, and there is something genuinely romantic about a night train to a city you have never seen, watching the lights of Delhi give way to the darkness of the Rajasthan plains, the stars appearing above the desert, the sense of the journey itself as a kind of arrival.

You will reach Udaipur the following morning, rested, and ready.

Day 3: Udaipur Arrives - City Palace, Bagore Ki Haveli & the Monsoon Palace Sunset

The train pulls into Udaipur in the morning and your private car is waiting at the station to transfer you to your hotel. Check in, freshen up, have breakfast, and take the morning at whatever pace feels right. The afternoon and evening are where Udaipur begins to reveal itself.

City Palace - The largest palace complex in Rajasthan, the City Palace of Udaipur rises in eleven interconnected palaces above the eastern shore of Lake Pichola, a vertical accumulation of marble courtyards, royal apartments, hanging gardens, and ceremonial halls built by successive Maharanas of Mewar over nearly four centuries. Begin in the City Palace Museum, whose rooms contain some of the finest examples of Rajput decorative art in India: miniature paintings of extraordinary delicacy, inlaid mirror work, coloured glass windows that fill the interiors with fractured rainbow light, and royal artifacts that trace the long, proud history of the Mewar dynasty. From the upper terraces of the palace, the view over Lake Pichola, the lake shimmering below, the Lake Palace Hotel floating white on the water, the hills of the Aravalli beyond, is one of the most beautiful urban panoramas in India. Take your time here. The view rewards it.

Bagore Ki Haveli - In the narrow lanes that run along the lake's edge in the old city, the Bagore Ki Haveli is an eighteenth-century nobleman's mansion that has been preserved as a museum and cultural centre. Its rooms are a treasury of royal Udaipur life, vintage costumes, traditional furniture, folk art, and artefacts from the Mewar court displayed in spaces that have retained their original proportions and atmosphere. In the evenings, the haveli's courtyard hosts a cultural performance of Rajasthani folk dance and music that is one of the most authentic and enjoyable cultural experiences in the city, the puppeteers and the ghoomar dancers and the musicians performing in a space that was built for exactly this kind of royal entertainment.

Sajjangarh Fort (Monsoon Palace) - As the afternoon light begins its descent, we drive up the hillside above Udaipur to the Monsoon Palace, the Sajjangarh Fort, built in 1884 by Maharana Sajjan Singh on the highest peak of the Aravalli range overlooking the city. It was designed as a monsoon retreat and an astronomical observation point, and from its ramparts the entire world of Udaipur lies below: the lakes catching the sky, the City Palace rising from the shore, the old city spreading in its maze of lanes and rooftops, the hills receding in every direction to the horizon.

The sunset from Sajjangarh is, without exaggeration, one of the most spectacular natural and architectural views in all of India. The sky moves through its sequence of colours - gold, amber, rose, violet and below, the lakes of Udaipur begin to glow with their reflections of the same colours, so that the city appears to float between two versions of the same beautiful sky. For a honeymoon couple, standing here together as the sun goes down, it is the kind of moment that requires no commentary and no photograph to preserve because it is already, permanently, part of you.

Day 4: Saheliyon Ki Bari + Sunset Boat Ride on Lake Pichola - The Most Romantic Evening in India

Today is the heart of the Udaipur experience, a day that moves gently from garden to lake and delivers, in its final hours, what many of our honeymoon guests describe as the most beautiful evening of their lives.

Saheliyon Ki Bari (Garden of the Maidens) - Built by Maharana Sangram Singh in the eighteenth century as a gift for his queen and her handmaidens, Saheliyon Ki Bari is a garden of marble fountains, lotus pools, elephant-shaped water spouts, and kiosks of delicate carved marble that has been a place of gentle royal pleasure for three hundred years. The garden is not grand in the way that Mughal gardens are grand — it is intimate, detailed, and decorated with the particular sensibility of a space designed for women's leisure and conversation. The marble pavilions reflected in the still pools, the fountains playing in the morning light, the fragrance of the flowers, it is a place of genuine and understated beauty, and one that feels quietly, perfectly appropriate for a honeymoon morning.

Sunset Boat Ride on Lake Pichola - Jag Mandir & Palace Views - This is the centrepiece of the entire tour, and it earns that status completely.

Lake Pichola is an artificial lake built in the fourteenth century and enlarged by successive Maharanas until it reached its current extent of four kilometres by three. On its surface sit two islands: the Jag Niwas (now the famous Lake Palace Hotel, a vision of white marble that appears to float on the water) and Jag Mandir, a seventeenth-century island palace of extraordinary beauty that served, among other things, as refuge for the Mughal prince Shah Jahan during his rebellion against his father and is believed to have inspired, in his later years as Emperor, certain elements of the Taj Mahal.

The evening boat ride on Lake Pichola is timed to begin as the light starts its golden turn. Your boat moves across the water with the City Palace growing and filling the view to the east, its terraces and towers reflected in the lake below. You pass close to Jag Mandir, the island palace lit from below as the dusk deepens, its marble glowing amber and gold, peacocks moving through the island gardens visible from the water. The Lake Palace Hotel sits white and luminous on its island, its reflection a perfect double in the still surface. The hills behind the city darken. The lamps of the old city begin to appear. The sky completes its sequence of colours.

There is no better place to be, in all of India, at this hour, than on a boat on Lake Pichola with someone you love.

Day 5: Fateh Sagar Lake + Afternoon Train to Delhi - A Gentle Goodbye

After breakfast, there is one final piece of Udaipur to savour before the journey home begins.

Fateh Sagar Lake - The second great lake of Udaipur, Fateh Sagar sits to the north of the city, quieter and less ornate than Pichola, with a quality of open, breezy peace that is very different from the jewelled intimacy of the older lake. A morning walk along the Fateh Sagar promenade, the water beside you, the hills in the distance, the occasional boat making its way to the small island in the centre, is the ideal final Udaipur experience: calm, beautiful, and unhurried. Buy a glass of fresh fruit juice from one of the lakeside vendors. Sit for a while on the low wall above the water. Let Udaipur say its goodbye to you at its own pace.

By early afternoon, we drive to Udaipur Railway Station, arriving comfortably in time for your afternoon Fast AC Train back to Delhi. The return journey by night train brings you into Delhi the following morning, another comfortable overnight crossing of the Rajasthan plains, the journey itself a kind of quiet conclusion.

Day 6: Delhi Arrival - Final Morning & Departure

The train arrives in Delhi in the morning. Your private SUV is waiting at the station to transfer you to your hotel for freshening up and breakfast. The final day is entirely flexible, built around your flight time and your preferences.

If your flight is in the evening, Delhi offers a final morning of options: a return to a favourite spot, a last round of shopping at Janpath or the craft emporiums of Connaught Place, a leisurely lunch at a rooftop restaurant with the city laid out below. Or simply a quiet morning at the hotel — coffee, conversation, the unhurried pleasure of a journey not quite over yet.

When your flight time approaches, your private SUV takes you to Indira Gandhi International Airport with time to spare.

Your Royal Udaipur Honeymoon Tour ends here but Udaipur, as every couple who visits discovers, does not end quite so easily. It stays. It surfaces in unexpected moments for months and years afterward: in the memory of a lake turning gold at sunset, in the echo of music from a haveli courtyard, in the white shape of a palace floating on the dark water of a remembered evening.

That is what Udaipur does to the people who love each other within it.

Best Time to Visit

October to March is the ideal season for a Udaipur honeymoon, and each month has its own specific character:

October – November: Post-monsoon Udaipur is lush and green, the lakes full, the air washed clean. The weather is warm and lovely. An excellent time for the complete experience.

December – January: Peak season, and for good reason. Cool, clear days and crisp evenings make sightseeing supremely comfortable. The lake sunsets are at their most vivid in the winter light. Most romantic time of year for the boat ride.

February – March: Warming gently, with the city beginning to bloom. February is particularly beautiful, the famous Mewar Festival falls in March, filling Udaipur with colour, music, and folk tradition, making it a wonderful time for culturally engaged couples.

Summer (April–June) brings significant heat. Monsoon (July–September) brings dramatic skies and green hills, beautiful in its own way, though the lakes can be choppy and some outdoor experiences are weather-dependent.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Is Udaipur the right choice for a honeymoon, are there good options for romantic dining and private experiences? Udaipur is, by wide consensus, the most romantic city in India and one of the most romantic in Asia. The rooftop restaurants overlooking Lake Pichola, the candlelight dinner options at heritage properties, the private boat rides, the sunset viewpoints, the city has been accommodating romantic couples for centuries and does it beautifully. We can arrange special candlelight dinners, room decorations, and honeymoon surprises at additional cost, simply let us know your preferences.

Q: Can we upgrade to 5-star hotels, including a stay at the Lake Palace? Yes, luxury upgrades are available across all destinations, including the iconic Lake Palace Hotel on Lake Pichola, which is widely considered one of the most romantic hotel experiences in the world. Pricing for luxury upgrades is shared in advance. We recommend booking well ahead for the Lake Palace, as it is consistently in high demand.

Q: Is the overnight train journey comfortable for couples? India's Fast AC train services offer comfortable reserved seating and a smooth overnight journey. For couples seeking additional privacy and comfort, we recommend booking First Class AC compartments, which offer enclosed four-berth cabins that can be requested for exclusive couple use. Contact us to arrange this when booking with an updated price.

Q: Is Udaipur safe and comfortable for international honeymoon couples? Completely. Udaipur is one of India's most visitor-friendly cities, calm, walkable in the old city, with a well-developed hospitality infrastructure, excellent restaurants, and a local population accustomed to and welcoming of international tourists. It is, in our experience, one of the easiest cities in India in which to relax completely.

Q: Can we add Jaisalmer or Jodhpur to extend this into a longer Rajasthan honeymoon? Absolutely, this package can be extended seamlessly into a longer Rajasthan journey. Jaisalmer, with its golden fort rising from the Thar Desert, and Jodhpur, the Blue City of Marwar, are both natural extensions that add their own distinct romantic character to the Udaipur core.
